Lambing Live 2012

Following the huge success of our first Lambing Live event last year, we will be repeating the event on March 30th this year. The farm will be open all day and night between 10.30am and 7.30am (morning of the 31st). We have even more sheep due to give birth this year and this should be the best date of the year for new arrivals. There will be refreshments available all night in the Tearoom and our Farm Shop and Deli will be open until 9pm. The excellent Frumptarn Guggenband will be providing early evening entertainment and there will be kids activities to take part in during the evening. Our adventure playground will be open and floodlit for the occasion. Admission is just £4.95 for adults or children, entrance after 10pm will cost just £2.95.

Easter Activities

We have a great Easter full of excitement coming up. We have sheepdog demonstrations where you can watch Elaine Hill and mans (or in this case woman’s) best friends showing off their skills herding ducks and geese. We also have bird of prey demonstrations and a bigger, better Easter Egg Hunt this year with some great prizes and there will be around 200 ewes to lamb over the 2 Easter weeks. There are children’s craft activities, the small animal petting area will be open throughout the holidays and there will be regular feeding using our innovative new tube system in the roundhouse. Easter activities will run between 31st March and 15th April. Sheepdog demonstrations will take place on the 31st March and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 13th 14th and 15th of April. Bird of prey displays run on the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th & 12th April.

New Arrivals on Valentine’s Morning

What a busy Valentines day morning we had! Farmer Roger and Farmer Robert woke bright and early and went to check for new arrivals but got more than they bargained for.

First check was the lambing pens where 7 new baby lambs had been born to 3 mums, then Robert noticed the sheep were crowded into a corner of their pen staring intently at the Highland cattle next door.

To his absolute delight he noticed a new born calf with it’s mum Honey. In the next pen, to his surprise the Highland cows daughter Buttercup had given birth to a calf too. Things didn’t stop there, when they entered the pig farrowing building they discovered 11 fine fat piglets.

“What a morning”, said Robert, “we didn’t know which way to turn.” We are running a competition to name the two baby calves. They are both female and you can enter on our Facebook page. Sheep Shearing At Spring Bank Holiday

Spring bank holiday runs from the 1st-10th June this year and we have a packed programme of events to delight the crowds. We will have a sheep shearing demonstration every day during the holidays so you can watch the sheep losing their winter coats. Sheepracing will take on a royal twist in this Jubilee year as Royal Ascot comes to Cannon Hall Farm and our children’s activities will take on a patriotic theme too. We have lots of baby goats and lambs due to be born too. Our small animal petting area will be open and you will be able to feed the cattle in the roundhouse through our innovative tube feeding system. A great holiday experience, admission is £5.95 for adults and kids.

Farm Shop Narrowly Misses Pork Pie Championship

Cannon Hall Farm Shop narrowly missed out in the race for the Yorkshire Championship in the annual pork pie and sausage competition.The farm was pleased to win third places in both the small pork pie and speciality pork pie competitions despite hundreds of entrants to the event at Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford. We were also finalists in the large pork pie competition reaching the last 6, a fine performance on only our second entry into the event.

February Half Term – Spring Lambing Week

We have 180 sheep due to lamb during the week of February 11th-19th so we are hoping for nearly 300 lambs.

This means there’s a great chance of seeing a lamb born. We are also expecting piglets, goat kids and you might even get lucky and see a baby llama as we have one due in February.We are looking forward to welcoming SMJ Falconry who will be displaying their collection of Hawks, Falcons and Owls between the 13th and 17th February. Weather permitting there will be flying displays too, so you can watch these magnificent creatures in their natural element.

We will be holding daily indoor kids craft activities some with a sheep related theme and our small animal petting area is open. Our petting area will be open all week and there is regular supervised feeding of the larger animals in the Roundhouse. The entrance price for this week will be £5.95 for adults and children of 3 years and over. Senior citizens will be £4.95 and children under 3 go free.

First Goat Kid of the year arrives.

Our first goat kid of the year was born on Monday 30th January.He’s a bouncy little chap and we are running a competition to name him on our facebook page. You just need to like us on facebook and search for his picture, then make a name suggestion. The winner gets a free family day ticket to the farm.

I don’t like to say it in case mother nature exacts her revenge but the weather this winter has made life so much easier. It seems hard to believe that this time last year we were trapped in winters icy grasp with the thought of never ending days of pipe defrosting and water carrying to cheer us along.

At the start of every new year I think it is a time to be thankful for what has gone and to look forward with optimism to what lies ahead. We are looking forward to lambing which starts at February half term when we will also welcome Sandra Johnson who will be demonstrating her Hawks and Falcons in a flying display.

We then look forward to Easter when we kick off our programme of events with our second lambing live event where we will again be open throughout the night giving our visitors an insight into the working day and night of our shepherd Nigel. He will be on hand to answer questions and deal with any new arrivals.

We are also planning an Easter Egg hunt and a sheepdog display, so Easter will be packed with excitement for everyone.

It will be around this time that we embark on our most ambitious building programme ever which starts with a new farmyard and indoor play area that we hope to complete this year.

We are marking the Queen’s Jubilee with our Royal Ascot themed sheep racing at Spring Bank holiday. There will also be a sheep shearing demonstration by David, my brother.

Thanks to everyone who visited in 2011, a record year for the farm. This was also a year when we also won Best Tourism Experience in Yorkshire, an award we are immensely proud of.
